About Perry Clemons
With 16 years under his belt as a seasoned educator and having grown up in a household filled with teachers, Perry Clemons knows the importance of engaging your audience. Perry has used many techniques to make sure that the material he teaches to his students is relatable, understandable, and retainable. But he found the same could not be said when he was going to training courses over the years. With such important subject matter as diversity, inclusion, and equity he felt something needed to change and the idea struck him for Inequality-opoly:The Board Game of Structural Racism and Sexism in America.
Perry pulled together techniques he had used for his own students, taking data, and gamifying it to make it more digestible and easier to understand. Inequality-opoly is a digital board game of structural racism and sexism in today’s America. The mission of the game is to raise awareness and advance discourse about how structural racism and sexism affect the accumulation of wealth in America and how they can hinder the retention of it.
At the start of the game each player is born as a perceived identity, now this identity will determine how much money they can earn a year, their chances of going to jail, how they are treated throughout the game and ultimately will affect their chances of winning the game. The objective of the game is to become the wealthiest player by buying, renting, developing properties, and making good financial decisions and deals. At various points you might get stopped by the police and your race and gender will play a part in how high a number or low a number you must roll to be able to go free. It will also determine how easy it is for you to get a mortgage approved to buy property and the obstacles continue and compound.
The game itself has been in development for six years with research and testing taking place in that time. It is based on recent national studies using real data to determine each player's likelihood for success and the adversities they may face whilst navigating the board. Perry has been rolling the game out for educational purposes for in house company training sessions and to training companies that offer D, E & I training courses, the response so far has been amazing. The game itself is accompanied by an online course called "Race, Gender, and Wealth in America" and a facilitator's guide. There is also a print and play version that is perfect for in person gameplays specially made for classroom educators.
Inequality-opoly is a game changer in the educational field and Perry hopes to roll it out far and wide across the country with hopes for possible worldwide or additional versions of the game. Already featured in Forbes, Comic Con, CNBC and more this is just the beginning of what Perry Clemons, and the Clemons Education Inc has to offer. It strives to create educational experiences that are windows to new worlds, mirrors to the self, and doors to new opportunities. With Inequality-opoly they are certainly on the right path.
